NMi Group acquires Phoenix Testlab to strengthen market access capabilities across battery, radio, and EMC compliance

NMi Group has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Phoenix Testlab, a leading German testing and certification body specialising in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), environmental, radio, battery, and product safety compliance. The move further strengthens NMi’s technical capabilities and enable its long-term vision to build a pan-European, agile Advisory, Testing, Inspection, Certification and Calibration (ATICC) platform. This would bring together an integrated group of specialist capabilities designed to meet the diverse needs of market access and in-life device assurance, while maintaining strict independence between services where required.

With an established client base in Germany, the acquisition will bring NMi even closer to its customers and better positioned to support them locally. The deal will also strengthen NMi’s ability to help manufacturers anticipate and respond to evolving compliance demands driven by electrification, digitalisation, and intelligent systems.

As new technologies blur traditional regulatory boundaries - cross EV systems, smart devices, battery infrastructures, and wireless networks - manufacturers need more than point solutions. They need integrated technical partners who understand the full compliance lifecycle and can adapt quickly to new legislative frameworks such as the EU Battery Regulation, Cyber Resilience Act, and updates to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED).

Yvo Jansen, CEO of NMi Group, said, “Phoenix Testlab will add critical depth to our testing and certification platform at a time when clients need faster, more coordinated support across multiple regulatory regimes. From radio and EMC to battery safety, we’re a partner that can see and solve the whole compliance picture. Just as importantly, we are fully committed to the continuity of the Phoenix Testlab team, who will bring exceptional expertise and trusted client relationships that will remain at the heart of the business as we grow together.”

With over 30 years of experience and a state-of-the-art facility in Blomberg, Germany, Phoenix Testlab brings trusted partnerships with customers across industries including global automotive OEMs and electronics manufacturers.

Max Rüter, Managing Director of Phoenix Testlab, said, “Development-accompanying testing and product compliance are evolving from a regulatory obligation into a strategic and commercial differentiator. By joining NMi, we will be combining decades of technical depth with the scale and agility needed to support clients as they navigate overlapping regulations and shrinking time-to-market windows. Together, we’re building a platform that’s not just reactive - but predictive - to the benefit of our customers.”

Phoenix Testlab’s fast-growing battery testing lab - active since 2005 - will extend NMi’s ability to support lithium-ion safety, vibration, and climate testing. Its global type approval services will also expand access for clients seeking compliance pathways in Europe, North America, Japan, and beyond.

Matt Legg, Partner at Bridgepoint (majority investor in NMi Group), added, “This acquisition will strengthen NMi Group’s position as a leading European market access partner for regulated, technology-driven sectors. Phoenix Testlab brings proven expertise, and we’re excited to support the next stage of integrated growth.”

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approval and conditions. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The transaction is an important development in NMi’s continued scaling of its international platform with the support of Bridgepoint, one of the world’s leading quoted private asset growth investors.
